What Do Motor Oil Viscosity Ratings Mean?

Viscosity refers to the thickness of a fluid. Your car’s engine specifications and temperature establish the appropriate motor oil viscosity. Oil that is too thin won’t lubricate all of the moving parts effectively, and oil that’s too thick can cause them to work harder than is necessary.

The numbers located on a bottle of multi-grade motor oil reveal its cold and hot weather viscosity. A 5W30 oil, for instance, tells you that the maximum viscosity of the oil in cold weather is 5. Low viscosity levels during cold weather is better for engine performance. Thick, high viscosity oil, moves too slowly. The W stands for winter. The 30 indicates the oil must fall within this viscosity range when the engine is fully warmed up or during hot weather.
