Hyundai Dashboard Warning Lights: What They Mean
A warning light is your Hyundai telling you something needs attention, and some need it right away. This guide sorts the lights in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual into three groups: stop safely now, have it inspected soon, and information only, with what Hyundai says to do for each. The manual was read October 26, 2026; other Hyundai models and equipment can differ, so check your own manual.
What should I do when a Hyundai warning light comes on?
Hyundai says to make sure all warning lights are off after starting the engine; a light that stays on indicates a situation that needs attention. For the engine oil pressure, charging system or low brake fluid lights, drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. For most other warning lights that stay on, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
The start-up light check
When you put the Engine Start/Stop button in the ON position, many lights come on for about 3 seconds and then go off; Hyundai lists the airbag light at 3 to 6 seconds. That is a normal check. Hyundai's advice is to make sure all warning lights are off after starting the engine, because a light that stays on indicates a situation that needs attention.
Hyundai also notes that the location of some warning and indicator lights may differ depending on the order in which they appear, so learn the symbols rather than their position.
Lights that mean stop safely or drive with care
For these, the 2027 Santa Fe manual tells you to get to a safe place, warns against driving on, or warns that braking may not work normally.
| Light | What it means | What Hyundai says to do |
|---|---|---|
| Engine oil pressure warning light | Engine oil pressure is low. | Drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. Turn the engine off and check the oil level; add oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Continued driving may cause engine failure. |
| Parking brake warning light, with the parking brake released | The brake fluid level in the reservoir is low. | Drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. With the engine stopped, check the brake fluid and add fluid as required, then check for leaks. If there is a leak, the light stays on or the brakes do not work properly, do not drive the vehicle. |
| Charging system warning light | A malfunction with the alternator or electrical charging system. | Drive carefully to the nearest safe location and stop. Turn the engine off and check the alternator drive belt for looseness or breakage. If the belt is fine, there may be a charging system problem; have the vehicle inspected if the light stays on. |
| ABS and parking brake warning lights on together | The ABS and brake system are not working normally (Electronic Brake Force Distribution warning). | Avoid high speed driving and abrupt braking, and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible. Hyundai warns you may experience an unexpected and dangerous situation during sudden braking. |
| "Engine overheated" message | Engine coolant temperature is above about 248 °F (120 °C); the engine may be damaged. | Do not continue driving with an overheated engine. Follow the "If the engine overheats" steps in your owner's manual. |

Lights that mean have it inspected
When one of these stays on, Hyundai's instruction is to have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer.
| Light | What it means |
|---|---|
| Malfunction Indicator Lamp (check engine) | A malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain. Driving with it on may damage the emission control system and affect drivability or fuel economy; catalytic converter damage is possible, so have it checked as soon as possible. |
| Airbag warning light | A malfunction with the Safety Restraint System (SRS) if it stays on while driving. |
| Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) warning light | A malfunction with the ABS. The regular hydraulic brakes still work. |
| Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) warning light | A malfunction with the power steering. |
| Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) warning light | A malfunction with the electronic parking brake. Hyundai notes it can also come on with the ESC indicator to show ESC is not working properly; that alone does not mean the EPB has failed. |
| Electronic Stability Control (ESC) indicator | Blinking means ESC is working. Staying on means a malfunction with the ESC system. |
| LED headlight warning light | A malfunction with an LED headlight (on) or a related part (blinking). |
| 4WD warning light (if equipped) | A malfunction with the four wheel drive system. |
| Immobilizer indicator, blinking | A malfunction with the immobilizer system. A brief blink when the smart key is not in the vehicle just means the engine cannot start without it. |
| Yellow driver assistance lights (Forward Safety, Lane Safety and others) | The system is off, disabled or has a malfunction. Hyundai says to clear any covering from the sensor or camera first; if the yellow light stays on, have the vehicle inspected. |
From the warning and indicator lights section of the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 26, 2026.
The tire pressure light: steady or blinking
The low tire pressure warning light comes on for about 3 seconds at ON as a check. If it stays on, one or more tires are significantly under-inflated, and the cluster shows which one. If it blinks for about 60 seconds and then stays on, or keeps blinking on and off at 3-second intervals, the Tire Pressure Monitoring System has a malfunction, and Hyundai says to have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.
Hyundai warns that the system cannot alert you to severe and sudden tire damage. If you notice any instability, take your foot off the accelerator, brake gradually with light force and move slowly to a safe position off the road. Tire tips are on our Hyundai tire service page.
Lights that are information
These lights tell you about a condition or a system. Some, like the master warning and GPF lights, still call for action.
| Light | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Low fuel level warning light | The tank is nearly empty; refuel as soon as possible. Hyundai says driving with it on or below E may cause the engine to misfire and damage the catalytic converter. |
| Master warning light | One of several systems has a problem, such as a blocked radar sensor, an exterior light malfunction, a door or liftgate malfunction, low washer fluid or a TPMS malfunction. It goes off when the issue is resolved. |
| Seat belt warning light | A seat belt is not fastened. |
| Door open indicator | A door or the liftgate is open. Hyundai says to confirm they are fully closed before driving. |
| AUTO HOLD indicator | White when Auto Hold is on, green when it is holding the vehicle, yellow for a malfunction. |
| ESC OFF indicator | You turned ESC off with the ESC OFF button. |
| AUTO STOP indicator | The engine is in Idle Stop mode of the Idle Stop and Go system. |
| Icy road warning light (if equipped) | The outside temperature is below 40 °F (4 °C) and the road may be icy. Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking and sharp turns. |
| Exhaust system (GPF) warning light (if equipped) | Soot has built up in the gasoline particulate filter. It may turn off after about 30 minutes above 50 mph; if it blinks with a cluster message, have the GPF system inspected. |
From the warning and indicator lights section of the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 26, 2026. Features marked "if equipped" are not on every vehicle.

Hyundai warning lights FAQ
Why do all my Hyundai warning lights come on when I start the car?
Many lights come on for about 3 seconds when the Engine Start/Stop button is in the ON position and then go off; the airbag light stays on for 3 to 6 seconds. Hyundai's advice is to make sure all warning lights are off after starting the engine. A light that stays on indicates a situation that needs attention.
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
The light Hyundai calls the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) means a malfunction with the emission control system, the engine or the powertrain. Hyundai says driving with it on may damage the emission control system and affect drivability or fuel economy, and that catalytic converter damage is possible, so have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.
What does the engine oil pressure light mean on a Hyundai?
That is the engine oil pressure warning light: engine oil pressure is low. Hyundai says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level. Continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure.
Why is my parking brake light on when the brake is off?
Hyundai says that if the parking brake warning light comes on with the parking brake released, the brake fluid level is low. Stop in a safe place and check it. If there is a leak, the light stays on or the brakes do not work properly, do not drive the vehicle; have it inspected.
What is the master warning light on a Hyundai?
On the 2027 Santa Fe, the master warning light comes on when one of several systems has a problem, such as a blocked radar sensor for Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist or Smart Cruise Control, an exterior light malfunction or low washer fluid, and goes off when the issue is resolved.
Some lights flashed on when my engine restarted at a stop. Is that a problem?
On vehicles with Idle Stop and Go, Hyundai says some warning lights (ABS, ESC, ESC OFF, MDPS or parking brake) may turn on for a few seconds when the system restarts the engine because of low battery voltage, not a system malfunction.
