Hyundai Elantra Oil Type and Capacity

Both gas Elantra engines take the same oil grade, but they hold different amounts. This guide lists what the 2027 Elantra owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com says, read October 28, 2026: the oil for the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi), how much each holds, when to change it and how to check the level. Other years, the Elantra Hybrid and the Elantra N can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.

What oil does a Hyundai Elantra take?

According to the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, both gas engines take full synthetic SAE 0W-20 meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. The 2.0L holds 4.54 US qt. (4.3 liters) and the 1.6L turbo holds 5.07 US qt. (4.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Replace the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.

From Recommended Lubricants And Capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number in the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

Hyundai explains that lower viscosity oils can give better fuel economy and cold weather performance, while higher viscosity oils are needed for lubrication in hot weather, and that oils of any viscosity other than those recommended could result in engine damage. The manual also says never to add any additives to the engine oil. Not sure which engine your Elantra has? Our service team can check it from your VIN.

How often to change the oil in an Elantra

ScheduleEngine oil and engine oil filter (2.0L and 1.6L turbo)
Normal maintenanceReplace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months
Severe usageReplace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months
After 10 years or 100,000 milesUse the severe maintenance schedule

From the normal maintenance schedule, the maintenance under severe usage conditions chart and the maintenance notice in the 2027 Elantra owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

The manual says the oil change schedule is there to prevent oil deterioration and is not related to oil consumption, so check and refill the oil regularly. If a lower grade engine oil (mineral oil, including semi-synthetic) is used, the oil and filter must be replaced on the severe schedule.

Severe usage conditions for Elantra oil changes

The severe usage chart in the 2027 Elantra manual gives the two engines different lists. The 2.0L moves to the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval under all twelve conditions, A through L. The 1.6L turbo moves to it under conditions D, H, I and L.

ConditionFrom the manual
ARepeated driving short distance of less than 5 mi. (8 km) in normal temperature or less than 10 mi. (16 km) in freezing temperature
BExtensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances
CDriving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled, or salt-spread roads
DDriving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
EDriving in heavy dust conditions
FDriving in heavy traffic
GDriving on uphill, downhill, or mountain roads
HTowing a trailer or using a camper, or driving with loads on the roof
IDriving as a patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use of vehicle towing
JFrequently driving at high speeds or rapid acceleration/deceleration
KFrequently driving in stop-and-go traffic
LUsing engine oil that is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.)

Checking the Elantra oil level

The 2027 Elantra manual gives this procedure:

  1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
  2. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake set and the wheels blocked.
  3. Turn the engine on and let it warm up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
  4. Turn the engine off, remove the oil filler cap and pull out the dipstick. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and push it fully back in.
  6. Pull it out again. The level should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
  7. If the level is below L, add enough oil to bring it to F.

Hyundai notes that oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km), and that driving habits, climate, traffic and oil quality all affect consumption. Do not spill oil when adding it, and wipe off any spill right away.

Oil life reminder and the oil pressure light

The manual says the Elantra may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. With severe driving, the remaining oil life alert can appear on the instrument cluster before the normal replacement interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended engine oil is used, and the remaining oil life should be reset every time the oil is changed.

If the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, the manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Hyundai warns that continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure. For the 1.6L turbo, the maintenance chapter adds that low oil pressure also activates an enhanced engine protection system that limits engine power.

Elantra oil questions

What oil goes in a Hyundai Elantra?

Full synthetic SAE 0W-20 that meets API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6. The 2027 Elantra owner's manual lists that oil for both gas engines it covers: the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi).

How many quarts of oil does an Elantra take?

For a drain and refill, the 2027 Elantra manual lists 4.54 US qt. (4.3 liters) for the 2.0L and 5.07 US qt. (4.8 liters) for the 1.6L turbo.

Can I use synthetic blend or conventional oil in an Elantra?

The manual requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic engine oil. If a lower grade oil (mineral oil, including semi-synthetic) is used, it says the engine oil and filter must be replaced on the severe maintenance schedule.

How often should I change the oil in my Elantra?

The 2027 Elantra normal maintenance schedule replaces the engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months for both engines. Under the severe usage conditions in the manual, it is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.

How do I reset the oil change reminder on an Elantra?

The manual says to select RESET from the infotainment system screen, then select Yes when it asks whether the engine oil has been changed. Reset it at every oil change.

Is this guide for the Elantra Hybrid or Elantra N too?

No. The oil table in the 2027 Elantra manual used here lists only the 2.0L and the 1.6L turbo. For an Elantra Hybrid or Elantra N, check the owner's manual for that vehicle.
