Hyundai Highway Driving Assist (HDA) Explained

Highway Driving Assist pairs adaptive cruise control with lane centering for long highway stretches. This guide walks through how it works using the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com, read October 28, 2026: where it operates, how to switch it on, what the cluster shows, the hands-on-wheel warnings, stop-and-go behavior, Highway Lane Change Assist and the limits Hyundai lists. HDA is an "if equipped" feature, and its details vary by model, trim and year, so check the manual for your Hyundai.

What does Highway Driving Assist do?

Per the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, Highway Driving Assist helps keep a set distance and speed from the vehicle ahead on a highway main section and helps center the vehicle in its lane. It works only on controlled access roads, needs your hands on the wheel, and can stop and restart the vehicle in traffic. Hyundai says it is a supplemental function and not a complete autonomous driving system.

What Highway Driving Assist does

The manual describes two parts. The basic function helps maintain distance from the vehicle ahead, keeps the set speed and helps center the vehicle in the lane, working together with Smart Cruise Control and Lane Following Assist. Highway Lane Change Assist (if equipped) helps change lanes in the direction the driver slightly moves the turn signal switch, if the function judges that a lane change is possible.

HDA relies on the front view camera, front radar, front corner radar (if equipped) and rear corner radar. On the 2027 Santa Fe, hyundaiusa.com lists HDA as standard on the XRT, Limited and Calligraphy trims and adds that it should not be used in poor weather, heavy or varying traffic, or on winding or slippery roads, and that the driver remains responsible for slowing or stopping the vehicle.

Where HDA works

Highway Driving Assist is available only on controlled access roads, which the manual defines as roads with limited entrances and exits that allow uninterrupted high speed traffic flow. In the USA that means select Interstate Highways and U.S. (Federal) and State Highways, and additional highways may be added in future navigation updates.

HDA does not operate on interchanges or junctions, and it turns off automatically on roads where it does not operate, such as a rest area, intersection or junction, or when the navigation is being updated or restarted. Because it uses navigation data, the manual says it may also operate or turn off unexpectedly depending on road conditions and surroundings.

Turning Highway Driving Assist on

First choose the functions in the settings: with the engine on, select Setup > Vehicle > Driver Assistance > Driving Convenience > Highway Driving Assistance on the infotainment system. If HDA is deselected, the Highway Lane Change Assist setting cannot be changed. The settings carry over when the vehicle is restarted, and Hyundai recommends changing them only after parking in a safe place.

  • HDA operates when you are on the main road of a highway and turn it on by pressing the Driving Assist button.
  • It also starts when you enter the main road of a highway while Lane Following Assist and Smart Cruise Control are already operating.
  • If Smart Cruise Control is temporarily canceled, HDA goes to standby while Lane Following Assist keeps working.

When HDA is operating and the vehicle ahead stops, your vehicle stops too. If that vehicle moves off within 30 seconds, yours follows. After 30 seconds, a "Use switch or pedal to accelerate" message appears; press the accelerator or use the + or - switch (or the resume switch the manual shows) to move off.

From Highway Driving Assist Operation in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 28, 2026. The status appears in the Driving Assist view on the instrument cluster, along with the set speed, the Lane Following Assist indicator, the selected following distance and whether lanes are detected.

Hands-on-wheel warnings and the speed limit

Hyundai says to always keep your hands on the steering wheel. If you take them off for several seconds, the manual describes staged warnings:

  1. A "Keep hands on steering wheel" message.
  2. The message with a red steering wheel, plus an audible warning.
  3. If your hands stay off, Emergency Stop activates.
  4. If your hands are still off after the warning, "Highway Driving Assist deactivated" appears and HDA is canceled automatically.

After a hands-off cancel, the driving speed is limited: the manual says Driving Speed Limit helps you drive below 40 mph (60 km/h) and cannot accelerate on its own. It ends when you grab the wheel again, press the Lane Driving Assist button, use the cruise switches or press the accelerator or brake. On equipped vehicles above 40 mph (60 km/h), HDA may also steer slightly away from a vehicle driving close beside you within the lane.

CancelOpposite turn signal, sharp steering, or the lever returned to center before the vehicle reaches the lane line

Summarized from Highway Lane Change Assist in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 28, 2026; the manual lists more conditions.

Hyundai warns that when Lane Change Assist turns off while operating, steering assist is temporarily canceled, and that it may not work properly where there are pedestrians or cyclists, such as at an intersection or crosswalk.

Limits Hyundai lists

The manual says the driver is responsible for controlling the vehicle, that HDA may not recognize all traffic situations, and that it may not detect vehicles, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians or structures such as guardrails and tollbooths. It may not operate properly, or at all, when:

  • the map and the actual road differ, GPS is blocked (for example in a tunnel) or the navigation cannot find the vehicle's position
  • Android Auto or CarPlay is operating, or the infotainment system is busy with several tasks at once
  • the vehicle enters a service station or rest area, or the route is changed or canceled
  • lane lines or road edges cannot be detected, or the road is under construction
  • a trailer, carrier or similar attachment is installed

Turn HDA off when towing a trailer or another vehicle; with Hyundai genuine parts, connecting a trailer electrically deactivates it. If the cluster shows "Check Driver Assistance system" or "Check Lane Change Assist function" with the master warning light, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Our service team can check the cameras and radar sensors; you can schedule service online.

Highway Driving Assist questions

What is Hyundai Highway Driving Assist?

In the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, Highway Driving Assist (HDA) helps maintain a set distance and speed from the vehicle ahead while driving on a highway main section, and helps center the vehicle in the lane. Hyundai calls it a supplemental function, not a complete autonomous driving system.

Which Santa Fe trims have Highway Driving Assist?

The hyundaiusa.com Santa Fe page, read October 28, 2026, says HDA is standard on the XRT, Limited and Calligraphy trims of the 2027 Santa Fe.

What roads does HDA work on?

Controlled access roads only: roads with limited entrances and exits that allow uninterrupted high speed traffic. In the USA, the manual lists select Interstate Highways and U.S. (Federal) and State Highways. HDA does not operate on interchanges or junctions, and it turns off on roads such as rest areas and intersections.

What happens if I take my hands off the wheel?

After several seconds a "Keep hands on steering wheel" message appears, then a red steering wheel message with an audible warning. If your hands stay off, Emergency Stop activates; HDA is then canceled and the driving speed is limited, helping you stay below 40 mph (60 km/h).

Can HDA change lanes for me?

On vehicles with Highway Lane Change Assist, the system can help change lanes when you move the turn signal lever and it judges a lane change is possible. You still need your hands on the wheel, and conditions such as a single dotted lane line and no collision risk must be met.

Can I use HDA while towing?

No. The manual says to turn off Highway Driving Assist when towing a trailer or another vehicle, and that HDA is deactivated when a trailer is connected electrically (with Hyundai genuine parts).
