How to Replace a Hyundai Key Fob Battery

In the 2027 Palisade manual, Hyundai's instruction for the low key battery message is to replace the smart key battery, and the owner's manual shows how. This guide covers the battery Hyundai specifies, the three-step swap, the things that can interfere with a smart key and how to get going with a weak one. It is based on the 2027 Palisade and 2027 Santa Fe owner's manuals, read October 26, 2026.

How do I change the battery in a Hyundai smart key?

Per the 2027 Palisade and Santa Fe manuals: insert a slim tool into the slot and gently open the rear cover, remove the old battery and fit a new CR2450 with the battery positioned correctly, then reinstall the rear cover. If the key still does not work, or you think it is damaged, Hyundai says to contact an authorized Hyundai dealer.

Replace the smart key battery in 3 steps

Both the 2027 Palisade and 2027 Santa Fe manuals list battery type CR2450 and give the same steps:

  1. Insert a slim tool into the slot and gently open the rear cover.
  2. Remove the old battery and insert a new one. Check the battery position: Hyundai says an improperly positioned battery may discharge it and cause smart key failure.
  3. Reinstall the rear cover of the smart key.

If you suspect the smart key is damaged or it is still not working correctly, Hyundai says to contact an authorized Hyundai dealer. You can schedule service online with our team.

The low key battery message

In the cluster display messages of the 2027 Palisade manual, "Low key battery" means that when the Engine Start/Stop button is pressed to OFF, a message may appear saying the smart key's internal battery is low. Hyundai's instruction is to replace the smart key battery.

Other reasons a smart key may not work

A new battery will not fix everything. Both manuals list these conditions under smart key precautions.

ConditionWhat Hyundai says
Radio transmittersThe key is close to a radio transmitter such as a radio station or airport that may interfere with it.
Two-way radios and phonesThe key is near a mobile two-way radio system or a mobile phone. Elsewhere in the same section, Hyundai suggests not keeping the key and your phone in the same pocket, especially while the phone is active.
Another smart keyAnother vehicle's smart key is being operated close to your vehicle.
Electronics and cardsThe key is near normal electronic devices or credit cards, or near an external device plugged into the power outlet.
Vehicle batteryThe vehicle battery is discharged.
Window tintMetallic window tint can cause frequency interference and reduce the smart key operating range.
Battery fitted wrongAn incorrectly positioned battery can cause smart key failure or premature discharge of the battery.

From the smart key precautions in the 2027 Palisade and 2027 Santa Fe owner's manuals, read October 26, 2026.

If the smart key does not work correctly, both manuals say you can open and close the door with the mechanical key. If the vehicle battery is the problem rather than the key, see our battery service page.

Key care, spare keys and lost keys

Keep it cool and dry

The Palisade manual says moisture or high temperature can make the key's internal circuit malfunction, and that this may not be covered under warranty. Avoid dropping or throwing the key.

Take it with you

Both manuals say to keep the smart key with you when leaving the vehicle, because a key left near the vehicle can discharge the vehicle battery.

Two keys at most

A maximum of two smart keys can be registered to a single vehicle, per the 2027 Palisade manual.

If you lose one

Hyundai says to take the vehicle and the remaining key to an authorized Hyundai dealer right away, or tow the vehicle if necessary.

Coin battery safety

Hyundai's warning in both manuals: the smart key contains a button battery, and a swallowed lithium button battery can cause severe or fatal injuries within 2 hours. Keep batteries out of reach of children, and seek immediate medical attention if you think one has been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body. Dispose of used batteries according to local laws and regulations.
