Hyundai Kona Oil Type and Capacity

Both gas engines in the Hyundai Kona take the same oil grade, but they hold different amounts. This guide covers the oil type, capacity, change interval and level check from the 2027 Kona owner's manual on owners.hyundaiusa.com, read October 28, 2026, for the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi). Other years can differ, and the Kona Electric and Kona N are not covered here, so check the manual for your vehicle.

What oil does a Hyundai Kona take?

The 2027 Kona owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, for both gas engines, and its maintenance schedule requires full synthetic. The 2.0L holds 4.5 US qt. (4.3 liters) and the 1.6L turbo holds 5.1 US qt. (4.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Replace the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.

1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi)SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-65.1 US qt. (4.8 liters)

From Recommended Lubricants And Capacities (page 2-16) and Recommended SAE viscosity number (page 2-18) in the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.

The viscosity section says that for these engines you should only use 0W-20 weight engine oil, and that oils of any other viscosity could result in engine damage. The manual recommends oils that carry the API Certification Mark, says never to add any additives to the engine oil, and its maintenance schedule requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic grade oil. If you are not sure which engine your Kona has, our service team can check your VIN.

From the normal maintenance schedule (page 9-11), the severe usage chart (pages 9-15 and 9-16) and the maintenance notice in the 2027 Kona owner's manual, read October 28, 2026. Intervals are whichever comes first.

If a lower grade oil (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec) is used, the manual says to replace the oil and filter on the severe schedule. It adds that the oil change schedule exists to prevent oil deterioration and is unrelated to oil consumption, so check and refill the oil regularly.

Kona severe usage conditions

The 2027 Kona manual lists these severe driving conditions. The 2.0L moves to the 5,000-mile or 6-month oil interval under any of them; the 1.6L turbo does so under D, H, I and L:

ConditionFrom the manual
ARepeatedly driving short distance of less than 5 miles (8 km) in normal temperature or less than 10 miles (16 km) in freezing temperature
BExtensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances
CDriving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt-spread roads
DDriving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
EDriving in the heavy dust conditions
FDriving in heavy traffic
GDriving on uphill, downhill, or mountain roads
HUsing for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof
IDriving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use
JFrequently driving under high speed or rapid acceleration/deceleration
KFrequently driving in stop-and-go conditions
LEngine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.)

How to check the oil level in a Kona

The 2027 Kona manual lists these steps:

  1. Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
  2. Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
  3. Turn on the engine and warm it up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
  4. Turn off the engine, remove the oil filler cap and pull out the dipstick. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully.
  6. Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. It should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
  7. If the level is below L, add enough oil to bring it to F, using only the specified oil.

Hyundai says not to spill oil when adding or changing it and to wipe up spills immediately. Oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km). The oil is very hot right after driving, so replace it only after it has cooled down.

Oil Life Management and the oil pressure light

The manual says the Kona may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts oil life from your driving history and alerts you to change the oil. With more severe driving, the remaining oil life alert can appear before the normal interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended oil is used. Reset it at every oil change by selecting RESET in the infotainment system and then Yes.

When oil pressure drops because there is not enough oil, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on and the enhanced engine protection system limits engine power. When pressure is restored, the light and the protection turn off on the 2.0L; on the 1.6L turbo they turn off after the engine is restarted. The manual warns that continued driving with the light on may cause engine failure.

Kona engine oil questions

What type of oil does a Hyundai Kona take?

The 2027 Kona owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20 meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 for both gas engines, the 2.0L (Smartstream G2.0 Atkinson) and the 1.6L turbo (Smartstream G1.6 T-GDi), and says to use only 0W-20 weight oil in these engines. Its maintenance schedule requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil.

How much oil does a Hyundai Kona hold?

For a drain and refill, the 2027 Kona manual lists 4.5 US qt. (4.3 liters) for the 2.0L and 5.1 US qt. (4.8 liters) for the 1.6L turbo.

How often does a Kona need an oil change?

On the normal maintenance schedule, both engines get new oil and a new filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. On the severe usage schedule it is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.

Why are the severe usage lists different for the two engines?

That is how the 2027 Kona manual prints them: the 1.6L turbo uses the severe interval under conditions D, H, I and L, while the 2.0L uses it under all twelve conditions, A through L.

Does this cover the Kona Electric or Kona N?

No. This guide covers only the two gas engines in the 2027 Kona owner's manual. For a Kona Electric or Kona N, check the owner's manual for your vehicle.

What should I do if the oil pressure light comes on?

The manual says to drive carefully to the nearest safe location, stop, turn the engine off and check the oil level, adding oil if it is low. If the light stays on after adding oil, or no oil is available, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Hyundai dealer as soon as possible.
