Hyundai Santa Fe Oil Type and Capacity
Which oil goes in a Santa Fe, and how much? This guide covers the engine oil grade, capacity and change interval Hyundai lists for the 2027 Santa Fe with the 2.5L turbo engine (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi), plus how to check the level and reset the oil change reminder. It is based on the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 27, 2026. The Santa Fe Hybrid and other years may differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.
What oil does a Hyundai Santa Fe take?
Per the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, the 2.5L turbo engine takes SAE 0W-30 full synthetic oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and holds 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under the severe usage conditions in the manual.
Santa Fe engine oil type and capacity
| Item | 2027 Santa Fe, Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi |
|---|---|
| Oil grade | Full synthetic, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6 |
| Viscosity | SAE 0W-30 (the manual's temperature chart shows 0W-30 across the full range) |
| Capacity (drain and refill) | 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) |
| Additives | Never add any additives to the engine oil |
From the Recommended Lubricants And Capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number sections of the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 27, 2026.
The manual explains that lower viscosity oils can give better fuel economy and cold weather performance, while higher viscosity oils are needed for lubrication in hot weather, and that using oils of any viscosity other than those recommended may result in engine damage.
Santa Fe oil change interval
| Schedule | Engine oil and engine oil filter |
|---|---|
| Normal maintenance | Replace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first |
| Severe usage | Replace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months |
| Lower grade oil used | If a lower grade oil (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec) is used, replace the oil and filter on the severe usage schedule |
From the normal and severe usage maintenance schedules in the 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual, read October 27, 2026.
The manual adds that engine oil is consumed while driving, so the level should be checked regularly, and that the oil change schedule is there to prevent oil deterioration and is not related to oil consumption.
When the Santa Fe is on the severe usage schedule
For engine oil and filter, the 2027 Santa Fe manual applies the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval to these driving conditions:
| Condition | From the manual |
|---|---|
| D | Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather |
| H | Using for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof |
| I | Driving for patrol car, taxi, or other commercial use |
| L | Engine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.) |
How to check the Santa Fe engine oil level
The 2027 Santa Fe manual's steps are:
- Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
- Turn on the engine and warm it up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
- Turn off the engine, remove the oil filler cap and pull the dipstick out. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
- Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. It should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
- If the level is below L, add enough of the specified oil to bring it to F.
Hyundai also says not to spill engine oil when adding or changing it, to wipe off spilled oil immediately, and to let the engine cool before replacing the oil. Oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in and should stabilize after about 4,000 miles (6,000 km).
Oil Life Management and the oil change reminder
The manual says the Santa Fe may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. If driving is severe, the remaining oil life alert can appear on the cluster before the normal replacement interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended oil is used.
Reset the remaining oil life every time the oil is changed: select Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > RESET on the infotainment system, then select Yes when the screen asks whether the engine oil has been changed.

Santa Fe engine oil questions
What type of oil does a Hyundai Santa Fe take?
The 2027 Santa Fe owner's manual (2.5L turbo, Smartstream G2.5 T-GDi) calls for full synthetic SAE 0W-30 engine oil meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6.
How much oil does a Hyundai Santa Fe hold?
The 2027 Santa Fe manual lists 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) of engine oil for a drain and refill.
How often does a Santa Fe need an oil change?
On the normal schedule, replace the engine oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first. Under the severe usage conditions listed in the manual, replace them every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.
Can I use synthetic blend or conventional oil in a Santa Fe?
The manual requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil. If a lower grade oil such as mineral or semi-synthetic is used, the engine oil and filter must be replaced on the severe usage schedule.
Should I add an oil additive?
No. Hyundai says never to add any additives to the engine oil, because additives can change the properties of the oil and may cause serious engine failure.
How do I reset the oil change reminder on a Santa Fe?
The manual says to select Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > RESET on the infotainment system, then select Yes when it asks whether the engine oil has been changed.
