How to Remote Start a Hyundai Sonata
Remote start lets your Sonata run for a few minutes before you get in on a cold Goshen morning. This guide covers the smart key steps, the checks that keep a Sonata from starting remotely, what happens after it starts, and the phone digital key and Bluelink options. It is based on the 2027 Sonata owner's manual, read October 26, 2026. Equipment varies by trim and year, so your own manual is the final word.

How do you remote start a Hyundai Sonata?
Stand within about 32 ft. (10 m) of your Sonata and press the door lock button on the smart key. Right after locking, press and hold the Remote Start button for over 2 seconds; the engine starts. The car must be in P (Park) with the hood and trunk closed. Press Remote Start once to turn the engine off. These steps are from the 2027 Sonata owner's manual.
Remote starting a Sonata with the smart key
The 2027 Sonata manual shows a smart key with door lock, door unlock, trunk open, panic and remote start buttons. To start the car remotely:
- Press the door lock button on the smart key within about 32 ft. (10 m) of the vehicle.
- Right after locking, press and hold the Remote Start button for over 2 seconds. The engine starts.
- To turn the engine off, press the Remote Start button once.
Timing note: the manual's two chapters word step 2 differently. The Convenience Features chapter says to press Remote Start within 2 seconds of pressing door lock; the Driving Your Vehicle chapter says to press and hold it for over 2 seconds within 4 seconds. Pressing Remote Start right after locking, and holding it, fits both.

After the engine starts
The 2027 Sonata manual says the vehicle turns off if you do not get in within 10 minutes after remotely starting it, and that the engine turns off if you get in without a registered smart key. It also says not to idle the engine for a long time.
If the smart key battery is weak or the smart key does not work correctly, the manual says to press the Engine Start/Stop button with the smart key to start the car from the driver's seat.
Using a phone digital key

The manual says the app function is only for Ultra Wide Band phone digital keys, the phone's Bluetooth must be on, the Bluetooth range can vary with the surroundings, and Remote Start may not be available depending on the country or vehicle type (hybrid, plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle).
Remote start through Bluelink

Vehicle Auto-Shut Off (if equipped)
Separate from the 10-minute remote start limit, the 2027 Sonata manual describes a Vehicle Auto-Shut Off that turns the engine off if the car is parked and left running for a long time, to help reduce fuel consumption and help prevent accidents.
Its timer runs only when the manual's conditions are met, among them a speed below 1.8 mph (3 km/h) in P (Park), neither pedal pressed, the driver's seat belt unfastened and the passenger seat empty. When it runs, the engine turns off automatically after 60 minutes. The manual cautions not to leave a passenger or a pet in the vehicle in hot weather, because the air conditioning turns off when the engine is off.
