Hyundai Tucson Oil Type and Capacity
This guide covers the engine oil the Hyundai Tucson takes, how much it holds, how often to change it and how to check the level. It is based on the 2027 Tucson owner's manual published on owners.hyundaiusa.com and read October 28, 2026. That manual lists two gas engines, the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) and the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI), and they take different oil grades. Other years and the Tucson Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid can differ, so check the manual for your vehicle.
What oil does a Hyundai Tucson take?
Per the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) takes SAE 0W-20 and the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI) takes SAE 0W-30, both meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and the manual requires full synthetic. The manual lists 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) for a drain and refill. Change the oil and filter every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, or every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months under severe usage.
Tucson engine oil type and capacity by engine
| Engine | Oil | Capacity (drain and refill) |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) | SAE 0W-20, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6; full synthetic required | 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) |
| 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI) | SAE 0W-30, API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6; full synthetic required | 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) |
From the Recommended lubricants and capacities and Recommended SAE viscosity number sections of the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 28, 2026. The manual lists one capacity figure for both engines.
The viscosity chart in the manual shows 0W-20 for the 2.5L and 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo across the full temperature range, and the manual says using oils of any viscosity other than those recommended may result in engine damage. It recommends only engine oils that carry the API Certification Mark, and says never to add any additives to the engine oil. If you are not sure which engine your Tucson has, ask our service team with your VIN.
Tucson oil change interval
| Schedule | Engine oil and engine oil filter |
|---|---|
| Normal maintenance | Replace every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months, whichever comes first |
| Severe usage (conditions D, H, I and L) | Replace every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months |
| After 10 years or 100,000 miles (150,000 km) | Use the severe maintenance schedule |
From the normal maintenance schedule and the maintenance under severe usage and low mileage conditions chart in the 2027 Tucson owner's manual, read October 28, 2026.
The manual says the normal interval is based on oil that meets the recommended specification; if any other type of engine oil is used, follow the severe schedule. It also says the oil change schedule is there to prevent oil deterioration and is not related to oil consumption, so check and refill the oil regularly.
When the Tucson is on the severe usage schedule
For engine oil and filter, the 2027 Tucson manual applies the 5,000-mile or 6-month interval to these driving conditions:
| Condition | From the manual |
|---|---|
| D | Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather |
| H | Using for towing or camping, and driving with loading on the roof |
| I | Driving as a patrol car, taxi, other commercial use of vehicle towing |
| L | Engine oil usage which is not recommended (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.) |
How to check the Tucson engine oil level
The 2027 Tucson manual's steps are:
- Follow all of the oil manufacturer's precautions.
- Make sure the vehicle is on level ground in P (Park) with the parking brake applied.
- Turn on the engine and warm it up until the coolant temperature reaches a constant normal temperature.
- Turn off the engine, remove the oil filler cap and pull the dipstick out. Wait 15 minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
- Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it fully.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the level. It should be between F (Full) and L (Low).
- If the level is below L, add enough oil to bring it to F.
Hyundai says not to spill engine oil when adding or changing it, and to wipe off spilled oil immediately. Oil consumption may increase while a new vehicle breaks in, and it should stabilize after 4,000 miles (6,000 km). Allow the engine to cool before replacing the oil.
Oil Life Management and the oil pressure light
The manual says the Tucson may be equipped with an Oil Life Management System that predicts engine oil life from your driving history. If the oil deteriorates faster because of how the vehicle is driven, the remaining oil life alert appears on the cluster display before the normal replacement interval; have the oil and filter changed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. The system works when the recommended engine oil is used, and the remaining oil life should be reset every time the oil is changed.
If oil pressure is low because there is not enough engine oil, the Engine Oil Pressure warning light comes on, the enhanced engine protection system limits engine power, and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp comes on. For both Tucson engines, the manual says the light and the engine protection turn off after the engine is restarted once oil pressure is restored.

Tucson engine oil questions
What type of oil does a Hyundai Tucson take?
It depends on the engine. The 2027 Tucson owner's manual lists SAE 0W-20 for the 2.5L (Smartstream G2.5 GDI) and SAE 0W-30 for the 2.5L turbo (Smartstream G2.5 T-GDI), both meeting API SN PLUS/SP or ILSAC GF-6, and it requires API SN PLUS (or above) full synthetic oil.
How much oil does a Hyundai Tucson hold?
The 2027 Tucson manual lists 6.13 US qt. (5.8 liters) of engine oil for a drain and refill.
How often does a Tucson need an oil change?
On the normal maintenance schedule in the 2027 Tucson manual, the engine oil and filter are replaced every 8,000 miles (13,000 km) or 12 months. Under severe usage conditions D, H, I and L, the interval is every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.
What if a lower grade oil is used?
The manual says that if a lower grade engine oil (mineral type, semi-synthetic, lower grade spec, etc.) is used, replace the engine oil and filter as shown in the maintenance under severe usage conditions schedule.
How do I reset the Tucson oil change reminder?
The manual says to select Setup > Vehicle > Convenience > Oil Change Reminder > Reset on the infotainment system, then select Yes when it asks whether the engine oil has been changed. Reset it every time the oil is changed.
